about us
The Donnybrook Apple Festival has a long history since its inception in 1954.
In 1953, Mr. Allan Frost proposed the idea of a South West Apple Festival.
The first festival in 1954 attracted 6000 people, featuring competitions, attractions, and a variety concert. Over time, the festival evolved with the main feature being the prestigious Apple Queen competition.
The festival faced challenges, including cancellations and changes in location, but it continued until 1968. After a ten-year hiatus, the Donnybrook Apex Club revived it in 1978. The festival became biennial in the 1980s, featuring a street parade, rodeo, apple pie competitions, and more. In 1992, the Donnybrook Apple Festival became an incorporated body.
Throughout the years, the festival adapted its format, themes, and activities, maintaining popularity. In the 2000s, it transitioned between annual and biennial schedules. Noteworthy changes included a 'free' street festival with Irish themes in 2001 and the opening of the Donnybrook Apple Fun Park in 2008. Since 2017, the festival's theme has been "Harvest and Arts," showcasing local produce and vibrant art scenes.
The Donnybrook Apple Festival remains one of the oldest festivals in Western Australia with its history embedded into the community and culture of Donnybrook and indeed the South West.
